You've may well have heard of this - we have many biomes - in our ears, eyes, mouth, on our skin, in the gastro-intestinal and urinary tracts. The common one we hear about is the 'gut microbiome'.
In our intestines there is a whole other world - if you think about it we are basically one big doughnut with a cavity starting at our mouth and going down through the stomach through the intestines and right out the other end. This tract is lined with trillions of microscopic bacteria all who like to feed on different things, and communicate back to us.
The intestinal tract has a lining, thinner in the small intestine and thicker in the large intestine and this is where they like to hang out. Having good gut health means having a healthy intestinal mucosal layer. There are many things that can hamper this and deterioration with age is common as the lining has taken a longer battering from life. Medications, sugar, alcohol, caffeine, stress, processed foods, chemical imbalances all affect your lining - as well as the environment you have been exposed to and your genetic make-up.
People suffering with IBS or other digestive issues are often found to have poor strength in the mucosal lining and imbalances between the good and bad bacteria - this is referred to as dysbiois. Getting to the bottom of exactly where the imbalances lie can be tricky, and testing can be required to give a more definitive path to better health.
The more obvious digestive upsets include:
But there are many other symptoms that could be linked to poor gut health.
